Product Review: Otterbox Commuter Series

As the name suggests, the Commuter Series is perfect for people who are always on the move. It is highly recommended for those who constantly pull their phones out while in motion. Its features put it next in the long line of successful products from Otterbox gadget cases.

The Commuter has two layers of cases. The inner layer is a flexible silicone jacket that fits easily around your gadget. The jacket absorbs shocks from drops, bumps, and daily use. It also separates the phone from the rigid polycarbonate shell that serves as your phone’s outer layer.

The texture of the shell is designed to increase friction between hand and phone, decreasing the chances of chance of the phone slipping off. The subtly rough finish provides a fairly good grip. This series also comes with a clear film screen protector that keeps your screen scratch-free. This two-layered cover is still significantly thinner than the Defender Series and its design does not sacrifice the substantial amount of protection your phone deserves.

The case has other great features. There are soft flaps for the head phone jack and the pin port so as to keep them away from tiny debris when they are not in use. The power and volume buttons are covered with slightly thick silicone that gives a solid feel when pressed. For iPhone 4 and 4S, the mute button is not covered due to its sliding function. Also, there is a small opening at the back that shows off the Apple logo. And just like all the other Otterbox products, it goes with a helping kit which includes instructions for installment, cleaning cloth, and plastic card to clean out the bubbles upon application of screen.

Otterbox has consistently kept a good reputation for producing top of the line smart phone cases that are able to withstand severe conditions. The Defender, for instance, is among the best that they have introduced. But for those who are simply looking for a design that’s slimmer, lighter, and easier to install but with the same pedigree, the Commuter Series is definitely the chic alternative.
